Thesis: John Muir, a passionate naturalist and early environmentalist, played a key leadership role in the formation of the National Park system, which through Theodore Roosevelt's endorsement, created an even greater legacy.
John Muir, an important environmentalist and activist, was a true demonstration of a leader who has left an enduring legacy. He was one of the very first people to take action and fight for preservation. Through his writings, speeches and relationships, he was able to convey his love of nature and passion for preservation to an audience that inspired a movement. His leadership intrigued president Theodore Roosevelt, which led to the creation of Yosemite National Park, and many other National Parks that followed.

National Parks are important to the United States for a variety of reasons. They help protect natural areas, which is important in maintaining ecosystems. Without protection, forests can be destroyed, which not only deprives us of their beauty and forest animals of their homes, but also causes emission of destructive greenhouse gases.
